Angelina Jolie’s six children are growing up fast, and one of her sons has already spread his wings across the country, making his mark in New York City. In a rare and personal interview with the New York Times, the actress and director revealed that her son now resides in an apartment she once called her own.

Jolie, who shares six children with ex-husband Brad Pitt—Maddox (23), Pax (21), Zahara (20), Shiloh (18), and 16-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox—explained that the New York apartment, purchased when she was a young adult, is now being “inhabited” by one of her sons. While she didn’t specify whether it was Maddox or Pax living there, Jolie did mention that her other children often visit the space, turning it into a “crash pad” for the siblings when they’re in town.

Despite living in Los Angeles, where she is based, Jolie enjoys visiting her son in New York. However, she shared that she has to give plenty of notice before popping by. “The other day I said I was going to pop by, and he was like, ‘Can you just give me a day to clean?'” Jolie recalled with a laugh. “I thought, I appreciate that, you should clean up for your mother,” she quipped. “But also, how bad is it?”

In addition to her children’s growing independence, Jolie shared that her time in Los Angeles is finite. She told The Hollywood Reporter in 2024 that once her youngest children turn 18, she plans to leave the city, a place she has felt tethered to due to her messy divorce. “As soon as they’re 18, I’ll be able to leave,” she revealed. “I’ll spend a lot of time in Cambodia.” Jolie, who has long been connected to the Southeast Asian country, explained that it feels more like home to her than the U.S.

Jolie’s connection to Cambodia goes back to 2001, when she visited the country while filming Tomb Raider. It was during this trip that she met and adopted her eldest son, Maddox, and later went on to adopt Zahara and Pax. Cambodia has since played a central role in her life and family, and she directed the 2017 film First They Killed My Father after Maddox encouraged her to share his story and history with the world. Maddox also worked as an executive producer on the film, which was a way for him to connect more deeply with his cultural roots.

The film, which explores Cambodia’s tragic history under the Khmer Rouge regime, was particularly important for Jolie, as she wanted to ensure that her son learned about his heritage and the darker chapters of his country’s past. “He goes back and forth [to Cambodia] a lot, but this would be over four months of just being in the country, really reading, listening, learning and absorbing all things about his culture and country,” she explained.

As her children continue to grow, it’s clear that Jolie’s journey as a mother remains intertwined with her deep personal connections to Cambodia, her evolving role in their lives, and her dedication to ensuring they understand the world and their place within it. While her family life might have changed over the years, her commitment to privacy, peace, and giving her children space to grow remains at the forefront of her priorities.
