Denzel Washington is marking a major milestone in his personal journey: ten years of sobriety. In a candid new interview with Esquire, the Oscar-winning actor reflected on his past drinking habits, the impact they had on his health, and the lifestyle changes he’s embraced since giving up alcohol a decade ago.
Washington revealed that his relationship with alcohol began in the late 1990s, and while he never considered himself “strung out,” he admitted to drinking regularly. At one point, he built a wine cellar capable of holding 10,000 bottles and would routinely consume two bottles of wine a day.
“Wine was my thing, and now I was popping $4,000 bottles just because that’s what was left,” Washington said. “My wife’s saying, ‘Why do you keep ordering just two?’ I said, ‘Because if I order more, I’ll drink more.’ So I kept it to two bottles, and I would drink them both over the course of the day.”
Looking back, the actor realized how he had rationalized his drinking habits. “I had this ideal idea of wine tastings and all that — which is what it was at first. And that’s a very subtle thing. I mean, I drank the best. I drank the best,” he explained. “But I’ve done a lot of damage to the body.”
Washington made the decision to quit alcohol at age 60. He hasn’t had a sip since, and he credits this turning point with allowing him to focus on his health and well-being. Now, as he approaches 70, Washington is determined to make the most of what he calls his “last chapter.” Inspired by his mother, who lived to 97, he says, “If I get another 30, what do I want to do?”
Part of his transformation includes a commitment to fitness. Washington, who works with a trainer introduced by his close friend Lenny Kravitz, has adjusted his diet and exercise routine to reach his healthiest self. “I feel like I’m getting strong,” he said. “Strong is important.”
Washington’s journey is a powerful reminder of the value of self-reflection, resilience, and the determination to make meaningful changes. As he continues to push forward, the actor remains focused on strength, health, and living life to its fullest.
