The long wait for James Bond’s return is finally coming to an end. Production on the 26th installment of the iconic spy series is reportedly underway, with Amazon fast-tracking the project following its $1 billion acquisition of MGM and the franchise’s creative rights.

According to sources, Bond 26 is expected to hit theaters by the end of 2027, continuing the franchise’s tradition of fall releases. The film, which comes with a hefty £250 million budget—the same as 2021’s No Time to Die—will mark a fresh chapter for 007 after Daniel Craig’s swan song.

A Shift in Creative Control
This new era for James Bond comes after Amazon’s deal with longtime franchise producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. While Wilson and Broccoli remain co-owners, Amazon MGM now holds full creative control of future films. This decision has sparked concern among some fans, but Amazon appears eager to keep the series’ cinematic legacy intact.

A source told The Sun that the Bond team is assembling writer rooms and exploring reboot ideas to ensure a return on their sizable investment. “The Bond bosses had already proposed broad plots and reboot ideas,” the insider said. “The writers’ rooms are being assembled in the hope of recouping their investment ASAP.”

Casting and Directing Rumors Heat Up
The hunt for a new James Bond has been one of Hollywood’s most closely watched casting processes. Names like Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Harris Dickinson, and James Norton have all been floated as potential successors to Daniel Craig. In March 2024, rumors surfaced that Taylor-Johnson had landed the coveted role, but the actor dismissed the speculation, saying: “I don’t feel like I need to have a future drawn out for me. I feel like, whatever’s drawn out for me, I can f***ing do better.”

Meanwhile, behind the camera, producers David Heyman (Harry Potter) and Amy Pascal (Spider-Man: No Way Home) are reportedly in talks to help steer the franchise forward.

A New Direction with Spin-Offs on the Horizon
In addition to the flagship film series, Amazon’s acquisition could open the door to a host of James Bond spin-offs. However, the streaming giant remains focused on the cinematic experience. The source stated, “Amazon knows fans want and expect a movie” and is determined to have filming completed by the end of next year.

A Long Time Coming
If the release date holds, Bond 26 will tie the record for the longest gap between Bond films, matching the six-year wait that followed Timothy Dalton’s Licence to Kill before GoldenEye debuted in 1995. With no official Bond movie since No Time to Die, fans have been left in suspense, but Amazon’s accelerated timeline signals a renewed commitment to the franchise.

A Legacy in Transition
As Amazon takes the reins, it also marks a turning point for Wilson and Broccoli. In a statement, Wilson reflected on his nearly six-decade career with the franchise, saying, “It is time for our trusted partner, Amazon MGM Studios, to lead James Bond into the future.” Broccoli added that her life’s work has been dedicated to preserving her father Cubby Broccoli’s legacy, but she is now ready to pursue other projects.

As the countdown to Bond 26 begins, all eyes will be on Amazon’s efforts to balance innovation with the classic elements that have defined 007’s world for over half a century. Fans can look forward to a new chapter for the world’s most famous spy—one that promises to honor the past while forging a bold new future.
