After captivating audiences for six thrilling seasons, Peaky Blinders is returning with a bang. The iconic British crime drama is set to continue its legacy with a highly anticipated feature-length film titled The Immortal Man. Created by Steven Knight, the movie promises to elevate the stakes for Tommy Shelby and his notorious crew while delving deeper into themes of “fatalism” and “hedonism.”

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Knight shared intriguing details about the film, offering a glimpse into the intense emotional journey ahead for the Shelby family. According to Knight, The Immortal Man will intensify the weight of the story, pushing its characters into uncharted territory as they grapple with the aftermath of World War II.

“It’s set during 1940, when Birmingham was being carpet-bombed every night by the German Air Force,” Knight revealed. “Obviously, the stakes are higher. People don’t know if they’re going to live until tomorrow morning. There’s a lot of hedonism, there’s a lot of fatalism, and you’re throwing into that Tommy Shelby, who was having his own existential crisis.”

Knight emphasized that, in this turbulent post-war period, the characters’ struggles for survival will feel more urgent than ever. With the world around them in chaos, Tommy Shelby, portrayed once again by Cillian Murphy, faces a deep internal conflict. The iconic gangster finds himself on the edge, questioning his place in a world that’s been torn apart by violence and loss.

Originally intending to create a seventh season of Peaky Blinders, Knight ultimately decided to bring the story to the big screen instead, a decision he attributes to the creative opportunities the film format allows. Grateful for the substantial budget provided by Netflix, Knight praised his star-studded cast for their exceptional performances. “The budget’s bigger, and let’s be honest, that helps. I would say this, but the cast, I think, is the best British cast that we could possibly have gotten into one place,” he said. “They are all at the top of their game. I’ve seen rushes and assemblies, and I’m seeing the first cut in a couple of weeks. It is phenomenally good.”

Returning to the screen alongside Murphy are several familiar faces from the series, including Sophie Rundle as Ava Thorne, Packy Lee as Johnny Dogs, Ned Dennehy as Charlie Strong, and Ian Peck as Curly. However, The Immortal Man will also introduce new talent, including Barry Keoghan, Tim Roth, and Rebecca Ferguson—actors whose involvement is sure to bring fresh energy to the film.

Written by Knight and directed by Peaky Blinders collaborator Tom Harper, the film also boasts Murphy’s involvement as a producer. With production wrapping up in late 2024, Knight confirmed that The Immortal Man would not only debut on Netflix but also hit theaters, giving fans the chance to experience the film on the big screen.

Despite the film’s release marking the conclusion of one chapter in the Peaky Blinders saga, Knight hinted that the story is far from over. He teased potential spinoffs and a possible sequel, ensuring that fans can look forward to more thrilling installments from the Peaky Blinders universe.

As anticipation grows for The Immortal Man, it is clear that Knight’s vision for the film will continue to push the boundaries of the iconic series, offering a deeper, darker, and more emotionally charged narrative. Fans of the Peaky Blinders gang can expect an unforgettable ride when the film premieres later this year. Until then, the series remains available for streaming on Netflix.
