Elizabeth Olsen, best known for her portrayal of Wanda Maximoff in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has seen her career undergo a remarkable transformation since she joined the franchise in 2015. While the MCU is often criticized by some for being a lesser form of entertainment compared to more traditional cinema, there’s no denying that the series has been a launchpad for many actors, including Olsen, who has gained newfound recognition and a diverse range of opportunities through her role.

Before landing her iconic role as Wanda Maximoff, Olsen had already made a name for herself in several notable films. Her performance in the 2011 indie drama Martha Marcy May Marlene was widely praised, and her role in the 2014 Godzilla reboot showcased her versatility. Yet, it was her entrance into the MCU that would ultimately reshape her career trajectory, propelling her into the global spotlight.

Olsen’s portrayal of Wanda, a character deeply rooted in grief and loss, has captivated audiences across five Marvel films, with her most significant development occurring in the Disney+ series WandaVision. While appearing as part of an ensemble cast in The Avengers movies, it was WandaVision that allowed Olsen to explore the depths of her character in a more intimate and nuanced way.

In a recent interview with The Talks, Olsen discussed how playing Wanda has been a transformative journey for both her as an actress and her character within the MCU. “As I’ve gotten older, I realized that I’m more attached to the characters than I think I am!” Olsen explained. “Especially when it comes to a character like Wanda Maximoff, who I’ve played over several Avengers films, the WandaVision TV series, and now also in my new film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”

She continued, “I mean, it’s been quite a journey. I feel like as she’s grown, I’ve grown. It made me have a deeper love for Wanda and really excited to do something different with Doctor Strange, where she has a lot of clarity. It’s a different growth for her in this film. They’ve done a great job giving me an arc and something real to play.”

Wanda’s arc, which began as a troubled and vengeful character in Avengers: Age of Ultron and evolved through the Avengers saga, is one of the MCU’s most compelling stories. Wanda’s journey, marked by the tragic loss of her brother Pietro and the love of her life, Vision, captured audiences’ hearts as she grappled with the complexities of motherhood, grief, and the desire for a family. Despite the promise of Wanda’s continued evolution, however, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness did not quite elevate her character in the same way that WandaVision had.

Released in 2021, WandaVision was a groundbreaking TV series that stunned both fans and critics for its inventive approach to storytelling. The show blended superhero action with psychological drama, exploring Wanda’s attempts to create an idealized family life by holding an entire town hostage. Olsen’s performance was both emotionally raw and physically demanding, which led to significant personal growth as an actress.

“WandaVision taught me a lot! It also freed up my body,” Olsen shared. “There’s this thing that happens when you do too much modern stuff, you start acting only with your upper body. Whereas with WandaVision, which is influenced by old fifties and sixties television series, you have to remember to move your entire body through space and tell a story physically. That was an amazing reminder for someone coming from the theater and not having done theater in such a long time: it makes me want to do theater again, I need it in my life.”

Indeed, Olsen’s theatrical roots, combined with the physical demands of WandaVision, allowed her to push beyond traditional boundaries of performance. It was a liberating experience for the actress, reinforcing the importance of physicality in storytelling and reconnecting her with her roots in theater—a discipline she hadn’t practiced for years.

As she continues to explore new opportunities within the MCU and beyond, Olsen’s journey as Wanda Maximoff remains a defining chapter in her career. Despite the occasional disappointment, such as the mixed reception of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Olsen’s growth as both an actress and as a character continues to resonate with fans. As she reflects on her transformative journey with Wanda, Olsen has solidified her place as one of the MCU’s most talented and beloved stars, with the potential for even more remarkable roles ahead.
