Why J.Lo Risked It All on Hustlers — and How It Paid Off

Jennifer Lopez is known for her commanding presence in the entertainment industry, commanding salaries that reflect her A-list status and global appeal. Yet, in a surprising turn, the superstar actress once revealed she did her iconic role in Hustlers for free — a decision rooted not in financial gain, but in pure passion for the project.

Lopez, who is accustomed to earning tens of millions per film, did not expect monetary reward from her role as the veteran pole dancer Ramona Vega in the 2019 film. In an interview with GQ, she revealed that the opportunity to work on Hustlers was more about love for the craft than the paycheck. “I do things because I love them,” Lopez shared. “I didn’t get paid a whole bunch of money for Hustlers. I did it for free and produced it. I bank on myself. That’s the ‘Jenny From the Block.’ I do what I want, I do what I love.”

Lopez was deeply involved in the creation of Hustlers long before the cameras rolled. As a producer, she had spent years advocating for the film’s adaptation from a New York Magazine article. Director Lorene Scafaria knew from the start that Lopez was the perfect fit for the role. “Ramona had to be Jennifer Lopez, or Jennifer and to be Ramona,” Scafaria told Screen Rant. The chemistry between the two creatives was undeniable, and it quickly became clear that Lopez was the only choice to bring the role to life.

However, Lopez’s commitment to the film almost didn’t come to pass. At the time, she was settling into a stable family life with her ex-fiancé Alex Rodriguez, and she was hesitant to disrupt that newfound peace. “There were times my career was going great, and my personal life was going OK,” Lopez admitted to Variety. “This is the first time where I have a really beautiful alignment between the two.”

Despite her reservations, Scafaria was understanding and flexible, even agreeing to delay production to accommodate Lopez’s schedule. This commitment to family over career highlights Lopez’s evolving sense of balance — something she had struggled with in previous years.

When Hustlers finally hit theaters, the film became a critical and commercial success, cementing Lopez’s performance as one of the best of her career. The movie garnered buzz, with many believing Lopez was a shoo-in for an Oscar nomination. Unfortunately, the Academy did not recognize her work, a snub that deeply disappointed the actress.

“I was sad; I was a little sad because there was a lot of buildup to it,” Lopez confessed. “There were so many articles, I got so many good notices — more than ever in my career — and there was a lot of ‘She’s going to get nominated for an Oscar’ … ‘It’s going to happen’ … ‘If it doesn’t, you’re crazy.’”

However, this disappointment helped Lopez realize that her worth was not determined by an award. “You want people to say you did a good job, and I realized, ‘No, you don’t need that; you do this because you love it,’” she reflected. “I don’t need this award right here to tell me that I am enough.”

In the end, Lopez’s involvement in Hustlers was a testament to her dedication to the craft and her ability to prioritize passion over paychecks. While the Oscars may not have recognized her, the impact of her performance remains undeniable, and Lopez’s commitment to the project proved that, sometimes, the greatest reward comes not from fame or fortune, but from doing what you love.
