Samuel L. Jackson, one of Hollywood’s most prolific actors, has revealed that some sage advice from Bruce Willis helped shape his path toward one of his most iconic and lucrative roles.
While speaking to Vanity Fair, Jackson, now 76, recalled a conversation he had with Willis on the set of Die Hard with a Vengeance in 1995. At that time, Jackson was already an established actor, but he didn’t yet have a franchise role that could anchor his career. Willis, who had already cemented his action hero status as John McClane, shared a bit of wisdom that stuck with Jackson.
“Arnold’s got Terminator. Sylvester’s got Rocky, Rambo. I’ve got John McClane,” Willis told him.
At the time, Jackson didn’t have a comparable character in his repertoire. That changed in 2008 when he made his first appearance as Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with a brief but memorable cameo at the end of Iron Man. Fury would go on to become one of the MCU’s most recurring figures, appearing in numerous films and TV series, including 2023’s Secret Invasion.
“I’m like, ‘Oh, OK.’ And it didn’t occur to me until I got that Nick Fury role,” Jackson said. “And I had a nine-picture deal to be Nick Fury – that, Oh, I’m doing what Bruce said. I’ve got this character now.”
Jackson admitted he was initially cautious about Marvel’s long-term plans. “I knew I had a nine-picture deal,” he told GQ in 2024, but he wondered, “How long I gotta stay alive to make nine movies?”
However, the rapid pace of Marvel’s production schedule quickly eased his concerns. “I didn’t know they were going to make nine movies in like two and a half years. It’s kinda crazy, like, Oh sh–, I’m using up my contracts! But it worked out.”
Although Jackson has appeared in other major franchises—such as Star Wars and The Incredibles—his role as Nick Fury remains his most financially rewarding. The character’s steady presence across Marvel’s interconnected universe has helped solidify Jackson’s position as one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars.
In February 2023, Willis’s family announced that the actor had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, following his earlier diagnosis of aphasia. While Willis has stepped away from acting, Jackson continues to carry forward the lessons and camaraderie they shared, now fully aware of how that simple conversation during Die Hard with a Vengeance helped shape the trajectory of his remarkable career.
