Daniel Craig has addressed his earlier remarks about who should take over the iconic James Bond role, revealing that his previously blunt response was more of a knee-jerk reaction than his true feelings.
Craig, 56, who led the James Bond franchise for a record-breaking continuous run from Casino Royale (2006) through No Time To Die (2021), initially drew attention with a curt remark to Variety when asked who he thought should step into the 007 role: “I don’t care.” This offhand comment struck many fans as dismissive, but Craig has now walked it back, explaining his perspective in a new interview.
In a conversation with The Sunday Times, Craig admitted he’d been less than diplomatic when addressing the subject. “But of course I care!” he said. “I keep saying I don’t, because people ask me all the time and I’m an ornery, grumpy old man, so I say I don’t give a s***. But I care about it deeply – deeply. I care what the franchise does, because I love Barbara [Broccoli] and Michael [G. Wilson, the producers].”
Despite his evident passion for the series, Craig emphasized that the decision ultimately isn’t his to make. “It’s not my decision or problem,” he noted. “I wish them luck.”
Since Craig’s departure from the role, speculation has been rampant over who will replace him as the world’s most famous spy. Current frontrunners include Aaron Taylor-Johnson, the Kraven the Hunter actor whose screen test reportedly impressed producer Barbara Broccoli. Other names frequently mentioned include Idris Elba and Tom Hardy, though Taylor-Johnson, 33, has emerged as a favorite.
Craig’s reflection on his initial comment suggests that, while he’s no longer directly involved in the decision-making process, he remains invested in the franchise’s legacy. As Craig continues to promote his latest film, Queer, directed by Luca Guadagnino, the search for the next Bond rolls on—with both fans and past franchise stars, including Pierce Brosnan and George Lazenby, weighing in on who might carry the torch.
