Seven-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton has shared his surprise and admiration for Hollywood star Brad Pitt’s driving abilities after witnessing the actor push a Formula One car to speeds of up to 180 mph during the filming of F1, directed by Joseph Kosinski. The movie, which is set to release on June 25, promises to bring the adrenaline-fueled world of motorsport to life with an exciting underdog storyline and an ensemble cast, including Pitt and Damson Idris.

Hamilton, who also served as a co-producer for the film, played an essential role in ensuring that the movie maintained Formula One’s authenticity. He worked closely with the production team to make sure the racing scenes were as realistic as possible, and both Pitt and Idris drove Formula Two cars designed to resemble F1 cars. Filming took place after real-life F1 practice and qualifying sessions, allowing for the most authentic racing experience.

In a recent interview, Hamilton revealed his thoughts on Pitt’s surprising skills behind the wheel. “Watching Brad drive around at speeds over 180 miles an hour was really impressive to see because it’s not something you can just learn overnight,” Hamilton said. “The dedication and the focus that Brad put into this process has been amazing to witness.”

The movie, which is expected to expand Formula One’s fan base, particularly in the U.S. following the success of Netflix’s Drive to Survive, features Pitt as a veteran driver making a comeback to the sport, alongside a rising young driver played by Idris. Hamilton highlighted that the film has everything to become a massive hit: “Brad Pitt, speed, thrills, an epic underdog story, drama, humour and a little bit of romance.”

Kosinski, who directed the film, also praised Pitt’s driving talents, noting that the actor’s natural skill was crucial to the film’s authenticity. “If Brad can’t drive, this whole film wasn’t going to work,” Kosinski explained. “What Lewis was very happy to discover was that Brad had a lot of just natural ability right from the start. I don’t know where he got that. … He rides motorcycles, which I think has something to do with it, but he’s just a very talented, naturally gifted driver, which gave Lewis a lot of confidence that we might have a shot at pulling this off.”

The film’s production involved shooting at incredible speeds, using remotely operated cameras mounted on the cars to capture the thrilling action. Kosinski likened it to “a live stage play,” with the added excitement of filming at 180 mph. “When you see Brad driving, that’s not acting. He’s really concentrating on keeping that car on the track and out of the wall during all those scenes, so that’s something that you just can’t fake,” he added.

As F1 approaches its release date, it seems that both the racing sequences and Brad Pitt’s surprising driving talents will be a major highlight of the movie, further adding to the buzz around what promises to be an exhilarating cinematic experience.
