The Minecraft Movie is gearing up for a strong opening weekend, with projections indicating a debut around $58 million in North America over the April 4-6 weekend. This promising figure comes from sources with access to data from the National Research Group, offering Warner Bros. a much-needed win after a series of box office misfires.

The upcoming live-action adaptation of the hugely popular video game is the first major film that co-movie chiefs Mike DeLuca and Pam Abby have overseen from start to finish at Warner Bros. The duo has faced considerable scrutiny after the studio struggled with a handful of underperforming films in recent years. Minecraft represents a critical step forward for DeLuca and Abby, who inherited several troubled projects in various stages of development. The studio also has Ryan Coogler’s highly anticipated vampire movie Sinners on the horizon, which is further fueling the studio’s hopes for a box office turnaround.

Produced in partnership with Legendary, the PG-rated film carries a hefty price tag, with a reported production budget of $150 million, excluding marketing costs. Tracking data for Minecraft shows an overall range between $53 million and $63 million for its opening, with the current estimate pegging the debut at the higher end. Warner Bros. is preparing for a final marketing push to ensure it hits the top of that range.

The Minecraft Movie follows a group of misfit humans who are transported into the iconic blocky world of the game and must learn to survive. The live-action film features an ensemble cast that includes Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, Emma Myers, and Danielle Brooks. The film’s appeal is resonating strongly with teenage boys and girls, with the movie drawing a similar level of interest to the launch of Sonic the Hedgehog, Paramount’s hit 2020 film.

This adaptation of Minecraft has been a long time coming, with Hollywood eager to make a film based on the beloved video game for years. However, like many other projects, the film faced significant delays due to the pandemic and subsequent labor strikes, pushing back its release date multiple times. Now, with its debut fast approaching, Minecraft is looking to make a big splash at the box office and set Warner Bros. back on track.
