Tom Hiddleston is set to captivate audiences with his portrayal of Charles Krantz in the upcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s The Life of Chuck. Released on March 13, the first trailer for the film offers a glimpse into the life of Krantz, a man whose story is told in reverse-chronological order. Hiddleston, 43, takes on the role of the older Chuck, alongside young Chuck, played by Jacob Tremblay, as we follow the intricate journey of a man reflecting on his place in the vastness of the universe.

The trailer features a striking voiceover by Hiddleston: “The universe is large and it contains multitudes but it also contains me.” As his character stands in the middle of a busy street, with people rushing by, this poignant line sets the tone for a film that explores the intersection of individual lives within the greater cosmic expanse. The sound of a ticking clock in the background further emphasizes the passage of time, suggesting that Chuck’s story will unfold in a way that’s both personal and existential.

The Life of Chuck has already garnered attention after winning the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival’s People’s Choice Award, beating out other highly anticipated films. This early recognition speaks to the film’s emotional resonance and the powerful performances expected from the cast. Hiddleston, known for his compelling portrayals of complex characters, is at the heart of this intriguing Stephen King adaptation, which is based on King’s 2020 novella from his If It Bleeds collection.

Speaking with PEOPLE at the Toronto Film Festival, Hiddleston teased a particularly memorable scene—a spontaneous seven-minute-long dance sequence. “Chuck Krantz is in town for a convention to speak to other accountants about accountancy things and he hears the beat of a drum,” Hiddleston explained. “It’s an infectious beat that infuses his whole body.” In this moment, Chuck unexpectedly finds himself moving to the rhythm, and across from him is a young woman who seems to share the same spontaneous joy. Hiddleston described the scene as “completely spontaneous and joyful,” hoping the audience will feel the same infectious energy he and his co-stars experienced while filming.

Directed and written by Mike Flanagan, a filmmaker known for his work on The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass, The Life of Chuck promises to bring a unique blend of Stephen King’s signature suspense with a more introspective, emotional narrative. The film also stars Mark Hamill, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan, Mia Sara, Matthew Lillard, Harvey Guillén, Q’orianka Kilcher, Kate Siegel, and David Dastmalchian, all of whom add depth and variety to the ensemble cast.

Set to hit theaters in June, The Life of Chuck is shaping up to be a thought-provoking exploration of life, time, and the human experience—anchored by Hiddleston’s captivating performance and Flanagan’s keen direction. Fans of King’s work and Hiddleston’s acting prowess alike are in for a cinematic journey that promises to be as entertaining as it is philosophical.
