The Oscar-Winning Role Harrison Ford Deeply Regrets Turning Down

Harrison Ford’s career has been defined by his portrayal of some of the most iconic characters in film history, from Han Solo in Star Wars to Indiana Jones in the Raiders of the Lost Ark franchise. He has been at the top of the A-list for decades, starring in a series of blockbuster hits, and his name is synonymous with Hollywood greatness. Yet, despite a career full of box office successes, cult classics, and global recognition, Ford has never won an Academy Award, and his one Oscar nomination came for his gripping performance in Witness.

While Ford’s legendary status in the film industry is indisputable, there is one role that he passed up, which ended up becoming a career-defining opportunity for another actor—and one that earned an Oscar in the process. It’s a rare regret in a career that has rarely been anything short of stellar.

In the early 2000s, Ford was approached by writer and director Stephen Gaghan to star in Syriana, a political thriller inspired by Robert Baer’s memoir See No Evil. Gaghan envisioned Ford in the role of Bob Barnes, a CIA operative embroiled in a tangled web of politics, oil, and corruption. However, Ford, hesitant about the material at the time, turned down the role, believing that he didn’t feel strongly enough about its truthfulness. In a candid moment, Ford later admitted to regretting the decision, saying, “I saw a bit of Steve Gaghan’s movie Syriana and I wish I’d played the part that was offered to me – George’s part.”

Ford reflected on the decision, adding, “I didn’t feel strongly enough about the truth of the material and I think I made a mistake. I think the film underwent some changes and I think a lot of it is very truthful. The things that I thought weren’t, were obviated after I left the table.”

As fate would have it, the role Ford turned down was given to George Clooney, who transformed for the part by growing a beard, packing on 35 pounds, and delivering a performance that would win him the Best Supporting Actor Oscar at the next Academy Awards. Clooney’s win was not just a career highlight but a cruel twist for Ford, who didn’t appear in any projects in 2005 and, therefore, missed the opportunity to star in a film that would go on to be highly regarded.

This was not the first time Ford had passed on a project by Gaghan. In the early 2000s, Ford was also offered the role of Judge Robert Wakefield in Steven Soderbergh’s Traffic, a film that would go on to win four Oscars, including Best Director for Soderbergh. Despite meeting with the director and even requesting some changes to the script, Ford ultimately turned down the role. Traffic became a critical success, and the film’s numerous accolades, including a win for Best Director, only added to Ford’s regret.

Given the success of both Syriana and Traffic, it’s not hard to imagine that Ford may approach any future offers from Gaghan with a bit more caution. While he has rarely had to live with regrets in his illustrious career, these two notable decisions stand out as missed opportunities in the eyes of many.

Despite these particular setbacks, Ford’s legacy remains untarnished. He has had a lasting impact on Hollywood, and his influence continues to be felt across the industry. His journey is a reminder that, even in a career as celebrated as his, there are always choices that lead to moments of reflection. Whether or not Ford ever gets another opportunity to work with Gaghan, it’s clear that his incredible body of work speaks for itself, no Oscar required.
