Don Johnson has shared a heartfelt update on his longtime friend, Bruce Willis, reflecting on their decades-long friendship and the struggles Willis is currently facing amid his dementia diagnosis.
The Miami Vice star appeared on Good Morning America, where he reminisced about the early days of his friendship with Willis. “Bruce and I were friends when he was a bartender at Cafe Central,” Johnson recalled. “I didn’t drink at the time, but Bruce was such a good storyteller, and he’d tell me about all the trials and tribulations of dealing with the drunks and the actors.” Johnson was instantly drawn to Willis’s charisma and storytelling ability, which led him to encourage the young bartender to pursue acting.
“I said, ‘You’d be awesome [as an actor],’” Johnson remembered, taking matters into his own hands by calling the casting director for Miami Vice, Bonnie Timmermann. Despite there being “5,000 of them” in the city, Johnson was adamant that Willis was different. “No, this guy is interesting and he’s special. Bring him in and read him.” Willis auditioned, and Johnson’s instincts proved right—he was cast in the iconic show.
Johnson further explained his ability to spot raw talent, stating, “I could sit with a director and in 15 seconds I can say whether he has film sense or he doesn’t. You just pick those things up.” His early recognition of Willis’s potential played a significant role in launching Willis’s career, which would eventually catapult him to international stardom in films like Die Hard.
In a separate interview with Entertainment Tonight, Johnson spoke more about his dear friend’s health. Willis retired from acting in 2022 after being diagnosed with aphasia, a condition that impairs speech and communication. In February 2023, Willis’s family made a more specific diagnosis public—frontotemporal dementia, a progressive neurodegenerative condition.
“We’re best of friends, and he’s having a little bit of a struggle right now, and I take this moment to send him love,” Johnson said. Despite the challenges, he reassured fans that Willis is in a stable place at the moment, echoing what Willis’s ex-wife, Demi Moore, shared on CNN earlier this year. “Given the givens, he’s in a very stable place at the moment,” Moore had revealed.
As Willis faces this difficult journey, Johnson’s tribute highlights the bond between the two men and his unwavering support for his friend. Willis’s impact on the entertainment world is undeniable, and Johnson’s recollections of their early days serve as a testament to the actor’s lasting legacy.
