Jason Momoa, widely known for his iconic roles as Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones and Aquaman in DC’s Aquaman, has long been a force in both television and film. Following successful roles in Dune and See, the actor’s latest venture takes him back to his Hawaiian roots with the historical drama Chief of War. While the series had seemed to come to a standstill after 2023 with no major updates, new insider reports suggest that the show is very much still on track.

Is Chief of War Still Happening?

According to a recent update from TVLine’s Matt Webb Mitovich, Chief of War is “very much” still in development, easing the concerns of fans eager to see the project come to life. Filming for the series wrapped up in August 2024, according to Jason Momoa’s previous update, but the release date remains undisclosed. While the production had hit a pause for some time, the recent confirmation gives renewed hope that the miniseries will hit Apple TV+ soon.

What Is Chief of War About?

Set to air on Apple TV+, Chief of War is a Hawaiian historical drama that will explore the unification and colonization of Hawaii from an indigenous perspective. Spanning eight episodes, the series delves into the pivotal moments in Hawaiian history, particularly between 1782 and 1810, when the islands were unified.

Jason Momoa stars as Kaʻiana, a Native Hawaiian warrior and aliʻi (noble), who journeys beyond the war-torn Hawaiian islands during the 18th century. Kaʻiana, often referred to as the “Prince of Kaua’i,” is one of the most renowned historical figures of Hawaii. His story is poised to bring to light the complex legacy of Hawaii’s indigenous people, told through a personal and powerful lens.

Behind the Scenes

Chief of War is co-created by Jason Momoa and Thomas Pa’a Sibbett, with The Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence also serving as an executive producer. Doug Jung is set to be the showrunner, and Justin Chon has been in talks to direct the first two episodes. The star-studded cast includes Momoa, Luciane Buchanan, Temuera Morrison, Cliff Curtis, Brandon Finn, James Udom, and Te Kohe Tuhaka, among others.

With its unique perspective and talented team behind the scenes, Chief of War has the potential to be a groundbreaking addition to the world of historical drama.

As the confirmation of the show’s continuation sparks excitement among fans, the question remains: when will it finally arrive on screens? While the timeline is still uncertain, the renewed momentum gives hope that Chief of War will make its much-anticipated debut on Apple TV+ soon.
