Jennifer Lawrence’s ‘Easy A’ Audition Disaster: ‘You Didn’t Get It Because You Suck’

Jennifer Lawrence’s rise to Hollywood stardom was nothing short of meteoric, with the 2010s cementing her as one of the biggest stars of her generation. From an Oscar nomination at just 20 years old for Winter’s Bone to winning the ‘Best Actress’ Academy Award for Silver Linings Playbook, Lawrence quickly proved she had the chops to be a leading lady. As her career flourished, she went on to become a household name, particularly after her iconic role as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games franchise.

However, before she became the face of one of the most successful teen franchises of the 21st century, Lawrence found herself vying for a role in another hit teen comedy—Easy A, a part that eventually went to Emma Stone and helped launch her career into the stratosphere.

Directed by Will Gluck, Easy A takes inspiration from Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter but with a contemporary twist. Stone stars as Olive Penderghast, a high school student who gains a reputation for promiscuity after a harmless white lie about losing her virginity spirals out of control. As Olive becomes embroiled in increasingly ridiculous scenarios, her life unravels, making for an uproariously funny yet insightful film. With Stone’s sharp comedic timing and the film’s clever script, Easy A was a hit, resonating with teens and adults alike.

But, as Lawrence revealed in an ‘Actress Roundtable’ organized by The Hollywood Reporter, she auditioned for the role of Olive and was desperate to land it. “I auditioned for Easy A. I wanted it so bad,” Lawrence confessed, recalling how much she wanted to play the quirky, misunderstood teen. However, as fate would have it, the role went to Stone, propelling her to leading lady status in Hollywood.

Stone, ever the jokester, didn’t let her friend off easily, teasing, “Well, guess what? You didn’t get it. You didn’t get it because you suck.” Though the two actresses shared a laugh about the audition mishap, it’s clear that Lawrence’s journey was destined for something different—and perhaps, even bigger.

Had Lawrence landed the role in Easy A, she may have not become the star of The Hunger Games franchise, which solidified her as a global sensation and a role model for a generation. The teen dystopia world of Katniss Everdeen and her fight for survival in Panem was a far cry from the sexually-charged high school antics of Easy A, but it was a role that would shape Lawrence’s career and her future choices.

Both actresses have since gone on to carve out incredibly successful careers. Stone, of course, has become one of Hollywood’s most beloved leading ladies, with roles in La La Land, The Favourite, and many more. Lawrence, on the other hand, continued to diversify her career, proving herself in mature roles such as American Hustle, Red Sparrow, and Mother!. In 2023, she even got the chance to step into a sex comedy akin to Easy A when she starred in No Hard Feelings, a film that marked her return to lighthearted, comedic territory.

Looking back, Lawrence’s Easy A audition may have been a missed opportunity, but it’s clear that her career trajectory was never meant to follow the same path. Instead, she went on to become one of Hollywood’s most versatile and sought-after stars, while Emma Stone’s Easy A breakout helped pave the way for her own illustrious career.

Ultimately, both actresses have proven that sometimes, missing out on one role is just the beginning of something even greater. And for fans, we couldn’t be happier with how their careers turned out—each flourishing in their own unique way.
