Emilia Clarke, best known for her role as Daenerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones, has bravely shared the life-changing challenges she faced after suffering two aneurysms while filming the hit series. In an emotional interview on BBC One’s Sunday Morning show, the actor opened up about the lasting effects of the medical crises, revealing that part of her brain is now missing.
Clarke first disclosed her battle with the aneurysms in a heartfelt essay for The New York Times in 2019. However, her recent interview shed new light on the extent of her condition. Reflecting on her survival, she noted how fortunate she was to be in the “really, really, really small minority” of people who can live a normal life after such a traumatic event.
The actor explained that strokes, caused by a lack of blood flow to a section of the brain, result in irreversible damage. Clarke’s experience with aneurysms left a significant portion of her brain affected, which has had long-term effects on her cognitive abilities. “There’s quite a bit missing,” she admitted. “Because strokes, basically, as soon as any part of your brain doesn’t get blood for a second, it’s gone.”
Clarke’s first aneurysm occurred in 2011, during the early seasons of Game of Thrones, followed by a second in 2013. The first rupture led to a stroke that required immediate brain surgery. When she woke up from the procedure in the ICU, Clarke found herself unable to remember even her own name. Overcome with fear, she confided in her doctors, expressing her desire not to continue living if she couldn’t work as an actress due to the potential loss of her ability to communicate.
“My job—my entire dream of what my life would be—centered on language, on communication,” she said. “Without that, I was lost.”
Despite the traumatic setbacks, Clarke made a remarkable recovery. She not only returned to her role on Game of Thrones but also underwent another surgery years later to treat a growing aneurysm. In the wake of her personal journey, Clarke launched the SameYou charity, which provides support for survivors of brain injuries and strokes.
Her resilience in the face of life-threatening challenges has inspired many, as she continues to advocate for those who endure similar struggles. Clarke’s openness about her health battles highlights the often-overlooked realities of surviving serious medical conditions while maintaining a public career. Her story serves as a reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the power of perseverance.
