Jennifer Lopez Admits She and Sean Penn Would Have Had a ‘Thing’—If Only They Were Single!

In 1997, Jennifer Lopez and Sean Penn found themselves starring together in Oliver Stone’s thriller U-Turn. The film, which also featured Nick Nolte, had a strong cast, but it was the chemistry between Lopez and Penn that caught the attention of many. In a revealing interview, Lopez reflected on her time working with the acclaimed actor and confessed that, had they both been single, their relationship on set would have been “very different.”

At the time of filming, Lopez was engaged to her first husband, Ojani Noa, while Penn was married to actress Robin Wright. Despite their respective commitments, Lopez admitted that there was an undeniable chemistry between the two actors. When asked about potential romantic connections with her co-stars in a parallel universe, Lopez didn’t hold back, naming Penn as the one she might have had “a thing” with.

“Should I get myself in trouble with my husband?” Lopez joked in a 1998 Movieline interview. “OK, in a parallel universe, Sean.” She went on to recount a conversation she had with Penn on set, where he asked if their experience working together would have been different had they both been unattached. Lopez agreed, saying, “Yeah! Very different.” She added that their personal lives at the time made a significant difference in how they approached the film and their interactions.

Lopez also shared her admiration for Penn, praising his talent and the strength he brought to the set. She noted that working with an actor of Penn’s caliber was a major accomplishment in her career. “He has a lot of strength and we got along great, actually,” she said, adding that she wasn’t intimidated by his presence or that of director Oliver Stone. Lopez felt that Penn could sense her confidence, which contributed to their positive working relationship.

Beyond Penn, Lopez also spoke highly of her other U-Turn co-star, Nick Nolte, whom she described as an amazing actor she deeply respected. “Working with Sean and Nick Nolte, too, who is a truly amazing, great actor whom I respect so much — that was top of the line,” she said. For Lopez, being part of a film with such talented actors felt like a significant milestone in her career, even though the movie received mostly tepid reviews and was criticized by some critics.

In the same interview, Lopez made waves with some dismissive comments about Penn’s ex-wife, Madonna. While she acknowledged Madonna’s prowess as a performer, Lopez made it clear that she didn’t consider her a great actress. “Do I think she’s a great performer? Yeah. Do I think she’s a great actress? No,” Lopez said. “Acting is what I do, so I’m harder on people when they say, ‘Oh, I can do that — I can act.’ I’m like, ‘Hey, don’t spit on my craft.’”

These remarks sparked controversy, with some taking offense to her critique of Madonna and other contemporaries like Salma Hayek and Gwyneth Paltrow. Lopez, however, insisted that her words had been taken out of context and that her intention was never to disrespect others but rather to express her passion for acting.

Despite the controversies and U-Turn‘s mixed reception, Lopez’s candidness about her experiences on set and her reflections on the relationships she formed there only further emphasize her commitment to her craft. With decades of experience in the entertainment industry, Lopez continues to balance her personal life and career with the same level of intensity, often leaving a lasting impact on the projects she’s involved in.
