The Actors Who Left Brad Pitt in Awe—And How He Surpassed Them All!

For Brad Pitt, one of the more curious hurdles in his early career was the very thing that made him a household name: his striking good looks. As an aspiring actor, he was so ridiculously handsome that it became both a blessing and a curse. While his rugged charm opened doors, it also led to a recurring criticism that he was a “character actor cursed with a leading man’s face.” This, in turn, made it difficult for him to be taken seriously as a performer, a challenge he had to work tirelessly to overcome.

As Pitt’s career progressed, he chose roles that allowed him to move beyond the stereotype of the pretty boy and into more complex, challenging characters. He took control of his destiny by diversifying his portfolio and deliberately selecting roles that pushed him as an actor. Today, there’s no question about his acting credentials, with accolades like an Academy Award, a BAFTA, and a Golden Globe to his name, alongside his successful ventures behind the camera as a producer.

However, in the mid-1980s, those prestigious awards were a distant dream for a young Brad Pitt. Back then, he was still establishing himself in the industry, and his breakout came in 1987 when he appeared in a four-episode arc on the popular TV drama Dallas, marking one of his first significant acting gigs. Around this time, Pitt was just starting to figure out who he wanted to be as an actor, and in a 1987 interview with Tiger Beat, he opened up about the actors who inspired him and whom he wanted to emulate. His list included some of Hollywood’s biggest names, whose influence would go on to shape his own career.

“Jack Nicholson is up there,” he said, clearly admiring Nicholson’s range and unpredictability. Pitt also mentioned Mickey Rourke, calling him “mind-blowing,” alongside Sean Penn, whose intense performances—despite his controversial public persona—left an indelible mark on Pitt. He also singled out Timothy Hutton, known for his breakout role in Ordinary People, and Marlon Brando, whose portrayal of Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire had an electrifying impact on him.

Pitt’s admiration for these actors is telling. Nicholson and Brando, of course, are untouchable legends in their own right, towering figures whose influence extends beyond even the most accomplished of actors. However, looking back with the benefit of hindsight, it can be argued that Brad Pitt has surpassed many of the actors he once sought to emulate. While Nicholson and Brando remain icons of the industry, Pitt has carved out a career that blends both the star power and the nuanced performances that he once admired in others.

Mickey Rourke, for example, embodied the kind of dangerous charisma that had Pitt in awe. Rourke’s early career saw him compared to Brando for his ability to meld raw sexuality with compelling vulnerability. However, Rourke’s self-destructive tendencies kept him from reaching the heights that many believed he would, a cautionary tale that no doubt resonated with Pitt as he navigated the pitfalls of fame. Pitt took the lessons from Rourke’s rise and fall, choosing a path that would allow him to thrive in the industry while avoiding the same fate.

Timothy Hutton, too, had a meteoric rise with an Oscar win at the tender age of 20 for Ordinary People. Despite this early success, Hutton’s career never reached the same stratospheric heights. Pitt, however, has sustained a career that has only grown more diverse and respected as the years have gone on, continuously challenging himself with a wide variety of roles.

As for Sean Penn, his career trajectory mirrors Pitt’s in many ways. Both actors have earned the same number of Academy Awards, but while Penn remained somewhat niche and never quite cracked the mainstream the way Pitt did, the latter’s consistent ability to balance both commercial and critical success has cemented his place as one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars.

At just 22 years old, Brad Pitt had already passed judgment on the actors who left the deepest impressions on him, and over the course of his career, he has not only lived up to these influences but has exceeded them in many respects. While he may have had to work harder than most to escape the shadow of his good looks and prove his worth as an actor, today, there’s no denying that Brad Pitt is a true icon in his own right—surpassing some of the very actors he once admired and emulated. From his early roles to his recent, critically acclaimed performances, Pitt’s career arc has been a testament to his versatility and ability to evolve as an actor, proving that he is far more than just a handsome face.
