Fresh off his Academy Award win for Oppenheimer, Cillian Murphy has shared a rare, deeply personal reflection on the actor who shaped his artistic journey — and the confession has taken the film world by surprise.

In a candid interview, the Irish star revealed the enduring influence of three-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis, whom he calls the gold standard of screen acting. Yet it was eight simple words that stunned fans and fellow performers alike:

“I’ll never be as good as him.”

The humility behind the statement resonated widely. Murphy, now considered one of the most compelling performers of his generation, admitted that even at the peak of his career he still measures himself against Day-Lewis’s towering legacy.

“Daniel is the greatest we’ve ever had,” Murphy explained. “Every time I prepare for a role, I think of his work. I measure myself against it — and I always fall short. But maybe that’s the point. He’s unreachable. That’s why he inspires us.”

Murphy has often pointed to Day-Lewis’s celebrated performances in My Left Foot and There Will Be Blood as touchstones. During the filming of Peaky Blinders, he was known to revisit Day-Lewis’s scenes before stepping into demanding moments, hoping to capture a similar depth and intensity.

But not everyone agrees with Murphy’s self-critique. Director Christopher Nolan described him as “one of the most fearless and exacting actors of his generation,” while co-star Emily Blunt added, “Cillian doesn’t need to compare himself to anyone. He’s already in that league.”

Still, Murphy remains steadfast in his admiration. “Daniel Day-Lewis is a mountain,” he said. “The rest of us are just climbers. And I’m okay with that.”

For audiences, the moment only deepens the respect for Murphy. At a time when he is celebrated worldwide for his craft, his quiet acknowledgment of influence and humility serves as a reminder that even the most accomplished artists remain students — forever striving to reach the heights set by their heroes.
