Tom Cruise Left Amused by Matthew Lillard’s Surprise Rom-Com Pitch

OPINION: This article may contain commentary which reflects the author's opinion.

Tom Cruise has faced plenty of unexpected plot twists on screen, but even he was caught off guard when fellow actor Matthew Lillard suggested the two team up for a romantic comedy.

While promoting his partnership with Exact Sciences’ Cologuard test, Lillard, 55, revealed to Us Weekly that he’s eager to step into what he calls his “rom-com era.” And for his dream co-star? He first mentioned Gillian Anderson — before doubling down with a more surprising choice: Tom Cruise.

“My political answer is Tom Cruise,” Lillard said with a laugh. “I really want to say something supportive of the LGBTQ+ community. I would love to do a rom-com. I think the world needs a smash-hit romantic comedy with two beautiful men or two fantastically gorgeous women.”

Cruise’s response, according to reports, drew laughter from those in the room — turning what began as a tongue-in-cheek casting pitch into one of the week’s more lighthearted Hollywood stories.

A Career of Versatility

Though best known for his work in Scream and as the voice of Shaggy in Scooby-Doo, Lillard has never shied away from mixing genres. Horror, comedy, drama — he has touched them all. “I have definitely been lucky across the expanse of my years to do a lot of really fun stuff,” he told Us Weekly.

The actor pointed to his packed slate, which includes roles in Scream 7, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, Cross, Daredevil, and a new Carrie miniseries with Mike Flanagan. He also hinted at a “super fresh” new Scooby-Doo project, joking that the 2002 live-action version remains “a minivan legend.”

Gratitude Amid Busy Times

Despite his humor and self-deprecating remarks — like claiming he’d need extra time to “work on [his] abs” before landing such a role — Lillard made clear how grateful he feels for the steady work. He acknowledged the difficulties many actors continue to face in the wake of recent industry strikes.

“People should know it’s hard out there right now for actors and anyone in the film and television industry, so I feel very blessed and lucky that my life is thriving right now. I’m very grateful,” he said.

More Than Acting

Lillard also used the interview to spotlight his partnership with Cologuard, emphasizing the importance of regular health screenings. “If you’re out there, 45 or older with a doctor recommendation, I will say that, having used it myself, the thing I think is great about it is that it removes fear. It alleviates fear,” he explained.

A Rom-Com Waiting to Happen?

While a Cruise-Lillard rom-com may not be hitting theaters any time soon, the suggestion was enough to spark laughs — and a wave of fan chatter online. For Lillard, it was just another reminder that, whether in horror films, cult comedies, or even hypothetical love stories, he’s never afraid to dream up the unexpected.

Would you like me to make this more of a light entertainment feature with a humorous edge (leaning into the fun of Lillard’s rom-com pitch), or keep it in this straightforward news-style tone?
