Oscar-winning actor and music enthusiast Cillian Murphy has unveiled a fresh, 12-track playlist to usher in the brighter days of spring — and his top pick might just leave fans smiling all season long.
From Rock Bands to Red Carpets
Before captivating audiences on stage and screen, Murphy had his sights set on a career in music. In his youth, he played in several bands, including The Sons of Mr. Green Genes, before pivoting to theatre — a decision that paved the way for his celebrated work in film and television. Despite his acting success, Murphy’s passion for music never waned. He occasionally takes to the airwaves as a BBC 6 Music broadcaster, curating eclectic sets for listeners.
Now, through his production company Big Things Films — co-founded with producer Alan Moloney — Murphy has released the Spring Sessions playlist on Instagram, complete with a caption brimming with seasonal optimism:
“We made it – it’s officially spring! It’s beginning to bloom here at Big Things, so here’s a fresh new playlist from Cillian to bring in the brighter days. Enjoy.”
An Eclectic Mix of Classics and Contemporary Gems
Murphy’s selections span decades and genres, weaving together a sonic tapestry as varied as the season itself. Highlights include Sam Fender’s reflective People Watching, the genre-blurring Limelight by Tune-Yards, and the raw urgency of Run Run Run by The Velvet Underground and Nico. There’s also Love of Country by The Murder Capital and Tom Waits’ soulful Cold Cold Ground.
The playlist ventures further afield with appearances from The Beach Boys, Little Simz, Fats Domino, The Band, Bob Marley and The Wailers, Kevin Ayers, and Lou Reed — proof that Murphy’s ear for melody is as sharp as his eye for a role.
What’s Next for Murphy on Screen
While fans press play on his spring soundtrack, Murphy’s film career shows no signs of slowing. The highly anticipated Peaky Blinders movie wrapped filming late last year, promising a return to his iconic role as Tommy Shelby. And in a surprise reveal at CinemaCon on March 31, director Danny Boyle confirmed that Murphy will appear in 28 Years Later, slated for release on June 20, 2025. Boyle teased that Murphy’s role will be worth the wait:
“Like all good things in life, you may have to wait a little while for him to make his appearance.”
With new projects on the horizon and a playlist ready to accompany sunny afternoons, Murphy proves that his creative energy extends far beyond the camera — straight into the speakers of fans worldwide.
