Back in 2013, Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg teamed up for the action-packed buddy cop movie 2 Guns. Though not a blockbuster sensation, the film delivered solid entertainment but has since slipped from the spotlight. Now, fans eager to revisit—or discover—this underrated action romp can stream it for free starting July 1 on Tubi, the popular ad-supported streaming service.
Directed by Baltasar Kormákur and penned by Blake Masters, 2 Guns is based on the comic book series by Steven Grant and Mateus Santolouco. Washington and Wahlberg star as Robert “Bobby Beans” Trench and Michael “Stig” Stigman—undercover agents in the DEA and Navy SEALs, respectively—who pose as criminals working together, each unaware of the other’s true identity. When their agencies disavow them, the two must evade arrest and assassination attempts, forming an uneasy alliance packed with explosive action and witty banter.
The film also features notable performances by the late Bill Paxton, Fred Ward, Paula Patton, James Marsden, Robert John Burke, and Edward James Olmos.
A Sequel That Never Took Off
2 Guns performed respectably at the box office, grossing over $131 million worldwide against a $61 million budget. While this was enough to avoid being labeled a flop, it fell short of guaranteeing a sequel. At the time, producers expressed interest in continuing the story, potentially adapting the comic book sequel 3 Guns, and reuniting Washington, Wahlberg, and Kormákur. However, years have passed without any further news, suggesting the follow-up quietly died in development limbo.
Producer Randall Emmett once told Collider, “Of course it comes down to Denzel and Mark and the director… We would love to do a sequel and we are pushing for it.” Yet, no concrete plans ever materialized.
Since 2 Guns, Washington and Wahlberg have appeared together only in the documentary Champs (2014) and have pursued separate acting projects. Washington recently starred in Gladiator II, while Wahlberg headlined the action thriller Flight Risk. Whether the two will share the screen again as leads remains to be seen.
For now, 2 Guns offers a fun throwback for action fans and a chance to revisit the chemistry between two of Hollywood’s most charismatic stars—now available to stream for free on Tubi starting July 1.
