Hollywood legend Harrison Ford is full of admiration for his newest co-star, Michael J. Fox, as the Back to the Future icon returns to acting in the highly anticipated third season of Shrinking. Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE at the Shrinking FYC Event held at the Apple TV+ Emmy House on May 18, Ford, 82, reflected on Fox’s powerful presence—not only in the series but also in raising awareness about Parkinson’s disease.
Fox’s return to the screen is remarkable. Having retired from on-camera roles in 2020 due to the progression of Parkinson’s disease, Fox, now 63, reunites with series co-creator Bill Lawrence, who previously worked with him on Spin City in the late 1990s.
Ford, who plays Dr. Paul Rhodes—a therapist grappling with his own Parkinson’s diagnosis—admits that he and Fox were not close before joining the show but is deeply inspired by Fox’s choice to step back into the spotlight. “His willingness to be part of our show is a great source of inspiration and gives us a real purpose,” Ford told PEOPLE. “It’s not just us coming together, two actors. There’s a story to tell, and our commitment to the story is what joins us together. I appreciate his willingness to be a part of the show.”
Fox’s involvement carries profound significance for shining a light on Parkinson’s disease, a progressive neurological disorder that affects movement, balance, and often leads to sleep disturbances, depression, and memory issues. Since revealing his diagnosis in 1991, Fox has become a tireless advocate, founding the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research and raising global awareness.
Ford acknowledged the impact of Fox’s advocacy and presence on set. “He’s pleased the Apple TV+ series is bringing Parkinson’s more into the light,” Ford said, praising Fox’s intellect, humor, and courage. While their characters represent different stages of the disease, Fox’s authentic emotional presence adds profound depth to the narrative.
Reflecting on how Fox influenced his own portrayal, Ford noted, “I’m sure that there are subtle things that will show up later,” emphasizing the collaborative effort to approach the storyline with honesty and respect.
Ford stressed the seriousness with which he approaches his role. “This is a person particularly equipped to communicate what it is that it’s like, and that is something that I feel is worth sharing with our audience.” His commitment to portraying Parkinson’s with “grace and courage and a little bit of wisdom” underscores the show’s sensitive and powerful storytelling.
With Michael J. Fox joining the cast, Shrinking is set not only to entertain but to continue advancing compassion and awareness about Parkinson’s disease. Seasons 1 and 2 are currently available to stream on Apple TV+.
