In a deeply emotional interview, Demi Moore spoke about her ex-husband Bruce Willis’ ongoing battle with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and the strength of their co-parenting relationship despite their past divorce. The actor, who was diagnosed with aphasia in 2022, received a more specific diagnosis in 2023: frontotemporal dementia. This progressive condition affects communication, memory, and behavior, and is known to be a particularly cruel disease.

Moore, 62, shared her gratitude for the enduring sense of family she and Willis have maintained despite their divorce, which occurred in 2000 after nearly 13 years of marriage. Together, the couple has three daughters—Rumer, 36, Scout, 33, and Tallulah, 31—and Moore has always emphasized the importance of their children’s well-being. In an interview with People magazine, Moore reflected on their relationship, saying, “That regardless of what the outside relationship has been, we have maintained being a family in various forms. The foundation of making our children our priority has never wavered.”

Moore also expressed her appreciation for the love and support that surrounds her. “I’m most grateful for my family, including my four-legged family, my children and all of the incredible, loving people in my life. I feel really so lucky.”

A Difficult Yet Beautiful Journey

The Willis family publicly shared Bruce’s diagnosis in 2023, revealing the progression from aphasia—a disorder that affects speech and communication—to the more specific diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia. “While this is painful, it is a relief to finally have a clear diagnosis,” the family said in a statement. They described FTD as a “cruel disease” that can impact anyone, and that the challenges of communication are just one symptom Bruce now faces.

Moore has been a steadfast supporter of her ex-husband throughout this difficult journey. In a December 2024 interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, she provided an update on Willis’s condition, noting, “Given the givens, he’s in a very stable place at the moment.” She went on to share a touching sentiment, “It’s so important for anybody who’s dealing with this to really meet them where they’re at. And from that place, there is such loving and joy.”

She acknowledged the profound difficulty of the situation but also pointed to the beauty that can come from it, saying, “I mean, obviously, it’s very difficult, and it’s not what I would wish upon anyone, and there is great loss, but there is also great beauty.”

Family First: Co-Parenting Through Adversity

Rumer Willis, the eldest of the three daughters, has also spoken openly about her father’s condition and the continued strength of their family unit. During an appearance on the U.K. talk show Loose Women in February, Rumer provided an optimistic update about her father, stating, “He’s doing great.” She also praised her parents’ approach to co-parenting, saying, “The thing I’m most grateful for is that even when they split up, they created such a beautiful foundation of prioritizing my sisters and I, that I never felt like I had to choose—they never played against each other.”

The bond between Moore, Willis, and their daughters remains strong despite the difficulties they face. Rumer reflected on the lasting impact of her parents’ commitment to their family, adding, “We were a family, and we still are very much a family no matter what.”

A Legacy of Love and Support

Bruce Willis, 70, best known for his iconic role as John McClane in the Die Hard franchise, has received immense public support following his diagnosis. His family continues to rally around him, providing care and love as he navigates the challenges of dementia. Moore’s unwavering support for her ex-husband and the enduring connection within their family serve as a poignant reminder of the power of love, patience, and mutual respect, even in the face of adversity.

As Bruce Willis continues his journey with FTD, his family’s dedication to prioritizing one another, especially their children, is a testament to the strength of the bonds they share. While the challenges of dementia are immense, Moore and Willis’s story offers a glimpse of hope and resilience for others facing similar struggles.
