Oscar-winning actor Cillian Murphy is ushering in the brighter days of spring with a personal touch—through music. The Oppenheimer star, whose early life was steeped in music before he pivoted to acting, has curated a new playlist titled Spring Sessions, offering fans a glimpse into the songs that soundtrack his favorite season.
Though best known today for his haunting performances on screen, Murphy once fronted bands like The Sons of Mr. Green Genes during his youth. His love for music never faded; he’s even hosted shows on BBC 6 Music, showcasing a deep, eclectic appreciation for sound. Now, through his production company Big Things Films, which he co-founded with producer Alan Moloney, Murphy is sharing that passion once again.
“We made it – it’s officially spring! It’s beginning to bloom here at Big Things, so here’s a fresh new playlist from Cillian to bring in the brighter days. Enjoy,” reads the Instagram announcement accompanying the playlist release.
The Spring Sessions playlist is a rich tapestry of old favorites and fresh discoveries. Highlights include Sam Fender’s introspective ‘People Watching’, the experimental ‘Limelight’ by Tune-Yards, and a classic cut with ‘Run Run Run’ by The Velvet Underground and Nico. Also featured are tracks like ‘Love of Country’ by The Murder Capital, and Tom Waits’ moody ‘Cold Cold Ground.’ Murphy’s selections span genres and generations, also pulling in icons like The Beach Boys, Little Simz, Fats Domino, The Band, Bob Marley and The Wailers, Kevin Ayers, and Lou Reed.
Even as he shares his musical side, Murphy’s acting career continues to thrive. Fans eagerly await his return as Tommy Shelby in the highly-anticipated Peaky Blinders movie, which wrapped filming late last year. Additionally, director Danny Boyle recently teased Murphy’s secretive role in 28 Years Later, the much-awaited sequel to 28 Days Later, set for release on June 20, 2025.
Speaking at CinemaCon, Boyle said of Murphy’s cameo, “Like all good things in life, you may have to wait a little while for him to make his appearance.”
As Murphy juggles upcoming projects, his Spring Sessions playlist offers a welcome reminder of his musical roots—and a perfect soundtrack for fans eager to savor the season alongside him.
