Mark Wahlberg, known for his transition from rapper to actor, has often been the subject of criticism regarding his credibility in Hollywood. Despite being lauded for his performances in films like Boogie Nights (1997), where he regretted his portrayal of pornography, and The Basketball Diaries (1995), Wahlberg’s career has not been without its missteps—one of which was turning down a role in the legendary Star Trek franchise.
The Star Trek series, originally created in 1966 by Gene Roddenberry, has evolved into one of the most successful and beloved science fiction franchises in history. It is now comparable to cultural phenomena like Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings, with fans dedicating countless hours to its intricate details, storylines, and characters. When J.J. Abrams revitalized the franchise with the 2009 film, starring Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, and Zoe Saldaña as Uhura, the film was a massive success both critically and at the box office. It even won an Academy Award for Best Makeup and received nominations for Best Editing, Sound, and Visual Effects.
However, Wahlberg, who was considered for the role of Captain Kirk’s father in the film, ultimately turned it down. According to the actor, the script was simply too much for him to comprehend at the time. In a candid interview, Wahlberg revealed, “I tried to read the script… I didn’t understand the words or the dialogue or anything. Then I saw the movie. I went, ‘Holy sh**, [Abrams] did a great job.’”
While many might regret missing out on such a major franchise, Wahlberg has no hard feelings about passing up the opportunity. He acknowledged that, in hindsight, he would not have turned down a chance to work with J.J. Abrams, a director he admires, particularly after Abrams’ success with the Star Wars saga. Abrams directed The Force Awakens (2015) and The Rise of Skywalker (2019), both of which played a pivotal role in reviving the Star Wars universe.
At the time, Wahlberg had a packed schedule, which likely influenced his decision to pass on the Star Trek opportunity. Around the same time, he was busy signing on for other projects, including starring in the hit comedy Ted (2012) and its sequel, which revolved around a man and his childhood teddy bear coming to life. More recently, Wahlberg starred in the Uncharted film adaptation (2022), playing Victor Sullivan alongside Tom Holland and Antonio Banderas.
Though Wahlberg may have missed his chance to join the Star Trek universe, he has continued to build an impressive career in various genres. His decision to pass on the Star Trek film may be a moment of what-ifs in his career, but Wahlberg seems content with the projects he’s chosen—while acknowledging that J.J. Abrams did a fantastic job with the film that could have been his.
