A tense, psychological thriller that flew under the radar upon its release has now found a new audience on Netflix. Retreat, released in 2011, stars Cillian Murphy, Jamie Bell, and Thandiwe Newton, offering a gripping exploration of isolation, paranoia, and human dynamics. Directed by Carl Tibbetts in his debut feature, the film is now available for streaming, presenting an opportunity for thriller enthusiasts to discover a hidden gem.
Set on the isolated Blackholme Island off the coast of Scotland, Retreat follows Martin Kennedy (Murphy), an architect struggling with his marriage to Kate (Newton), a journalist. The couple, reeling from a heartbreaking miscarriage, seeks refuge on the island to rekindle their strained relationship. Their retreat, however, takes a dark turn when a mysterious man named Jack (Bell) washes ashore, claiming that a deadly airborne disease is spreading rapidly across Europe, further trapping the couple in a claustrophobic nightmare.

The film had its premiere at the Fantasia Film Festival and was given a limited release in the UK and US, quickly fading into relative obscurity. But with its addition to Netflix, Retreat is poised for a second chance at recognition. While the film holds a 62% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences have been less enthusiastic, with the Popcornmeter scoring it at 40%. Despite the mixed reception, the film’s tension and psychological depth have drawn praise from several outlets.
The Guardian called Retreat a “neat, tense thriller” and acknowledged the strong performances, especially from Jamie Bell. Meanwhile, Total Film noted the film’s bleakness, lamenting the absence of originally planned co-stars Jason Isaacs and David Tennant. The London Evening Standard, on the other hand, described it as a well-shot, claustrophobic tale that evolves into a horror story, urging viewers to suspend disbelief to enjoy the film’s ride.
In a conversation with HeyUGuys, Murphy shared his thoughts on what attracted him to the role. “Actors love these claustrophobic dramas because they’re very psychological, very character-driven,” he explained. “Retreat is all about the dynamic between the three characters, which is very appealing to any actor.”
While it may not have made a major splash when it first released, Retreat‘s arrival on Netflix offers a perfect opportunity for viewers looking for a tense, thought-provoking thriller. If you’re in the mood for a suspenseful story that delves deep into human psychology and survival instincts, this forgotten gem might be exactly what you’re looking for.
